Plan Ahead for Adventure
It may seem as though the 2022/23 expedition season is a long way off, but you’ll want to book early to ensure you don’t miss out on a berth on Hurtigruten’s new itineraries taking in Svalbard, Alaska, Greenland, the Northwest Passage and Iceland. All of these Arctic destinations offer so many possibilities, from polar bears to the midnight sun. If you want to combine history with your cruising, follow in the footsteps of great explorers as you become among the few to sail the Northwest Passage. See how Inuit culture is thriving in Greenland. Add Patagonia and the Chilean fjords to your Antarctica adventure. See what conservationists are doing for the wildlife of Alaska. It’s all on offer.
We’ve been sailing in this part of the world for 127 years, so we know what we’re talking about. No other cruise line offers so many ways to immerse yourself in the history and culture of Scandinavia, so you’ll always experience more with us. What makes our offer so different? Each of the off-ship excursions has a maximum of 22 like-minded guests who are hosted by expert guides. And there really is something for everyone, from hiking fjords to visiting a reindeer farm. All our expeditions through Norway and Scandinavia include land-based journeys, offering the best of both worlds. Plus, there are a huge range of experiences included in the price of your voyage.
Follow the Lights
Anyone who has witnessed the majesty of the aurora borealis will tell you it’s an experience that stays with you. No wonder it’s one of the primary reasons many people want to head into northern winters. Our 18-day small group journey through Norway, Finland and Estonia explores cities, charming hamlets and the Flåm Railway before sailing north from Bergen towards the Barents Sea. As we get closer to North Cape, prepare yourself for Mother Nature’s ultimate light show. Back on land, there’s also the opportunity to spend the night in a glass igloo from where you can watch the illuminated night sky. Hurtigruten’s Follow The Lights tour departs regularly from September to March, and there’s also a 14-day southbound option.
See the Solar Eclipse
In December 2021, a total solar eclipse will send an eerie shadow over the South Orkney Islands, near the Antarctic Peninsula. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event that lasts just a few minutes, but Hurtigruten is offering two expeditions that will be in the perfect place to view this phenomenon on 4 December 2021. The eclipse will take place at about 4am with the sun hanging low on the horizon. If the skies are clear, guests onboard will be able to watch the entire event, including observing the chromosphere (red rim) when the sun is completely covered. As part of the expedition on either the MS Fram or MS Roald Amundsen, guests will be supplied with specialist solar filter sunglasses to protect their eyes, and a professional astronomer will be on board to enhance the experience. Book early, because these solar eclipse expeditions are sure to be extremely popular. Oh, and the next total solar eclipse won’t occur over Antarctica for another 400 years.
Are you a Hurtigruten Ambassador?
If you’ve ever travelled with us before, you’re eligible to be part of our 1893 Ambassador loyalty program. Generally, you’ll sign up when you book your voyage, but if that was a long time ago we may not have your details. But you’ll want us to have them. Why? Because you’ll get the latest news on itineraries and updates to our fleet, as well as any special offers. Plus, you can receive a 5% discount on a number of different voyages, including Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyages and Explorer Voyages, as well as free bicycle hire, a welcome basket in your cabin and a discount on selected excursions. If you’re wondering about the significance of that date, 1893 was the year Richard With started a weekly cruise service along the Norwegian coastline. More than a century later lots has changed, but we’ve kept alive the traditions of excellent seamanship, authentic experiences and a dedication to exploration.
On Your Own? Not a Problem
All Hurtigruten expedition voyages are fun and sociable experiences, which is perfect if you’re planning to take your next holiday alone. And, for a limited time, there are a number of cruises for which you can book a cabin to yourself and pay no single supplement. If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring Alaska and British Columbia, the Norwegian fjords, Greenland, Antarctica or even the Caribbean, but were worried about doing it alone, now’s your chance to take the leap of faith. You’ll definitely have a great time and are sure to make lifelong friends along the way. There are a number of itineraries available throughout 2021 where single guests pay no supplement, so be sure to check them out.
Explore Alaska from Home
It’s the largest state in the USA and its landscape is dramatic and stunning. You might already know about Alaska’s goldrush history and population of bears (there are many more living here than people), but you may not know it has more than 2,600 islands along its coastline. Which makes Alaska the perfect destination for expedition cruising. Explore what is considered one of the last great frontier regions with Hurtigruten, and experience vast tracts of wilderness and historic towns not on the majority of tourist routes. This is the perfect destination for adventurers. While it is possible to take in the stunning vistas – snowy peaks, icy fjords, untouched wilderness – from the deck of our ship, there is also the chance to go small boat cruising, hiking, kayaking, fishing and scouting for wildlife in the many fascinating bays. Still wondering if Alaska is the next destination for you? We’ve put together a short video that brings together some of the highlights of this fascinating part of the world.
